Works great (in dry heat, of course) and I'd recommend to friends. It definitely keeps the temperature down by at least 10º, and I find the noise of the fan quite soothing. The only problem is that our dogs and the cat splay themselves around the entire cold-air area (about a 10-15 foot swath), leaving very little cold-air space for the 2-leggeds.

I bought this cooler in September of last year. I used it about 3 times. This year I used it once then I went to turn it back on for the second time and it won't even turn on. That sucks. I have this big unit and nothing to do with it. I want to return it but nowhere to return it to.

In an effort to lower our power bill by using our air conditioner less we bought a couple of these portable coolers. We weren't sure what to expect, but they help cool the family room and bedroom while saving on the air conditioner. Our June power bill was less this year than 2009, so we're pleased with the results.

The only good thing I have to say is that it showed up faster than I expected. The "cool air" function is broken. The thing keeps beeping at me (which indicates it's out of water) despite having filled the reservoir to max as instructed. I let it run for a bit because I thought it might just need a bit for all the systems to get going. After 48 hours, it's essentially behaving like a really bulky fan. Not what I paid for. I'll be returning this.

I dont reccomend this to anyone where its hot and humid . I dont know about anyone else but it doesnt help me at all.It was a waste of money.I have tried it several times at different heat levels and no help at all.dont know what adding ice does ,because it doesnt help me at all.

Good product, easy to use. Don't expect to cool your full room, but if you put a bag of ice in the water well, along with some water, the air coming out from it is nice and cold. Oscillate the fan, and the whole family gets a cool breeze. Good product for a good price. Mobile friendly.

If you are looking for a portable air conditioner that does not need to be vented to the outdoors...I don't know that there IS such a thing, but this is not it. This is a very well made fan that uses water and/or ice to attempt to cool the air coming out of it. If you have it blowing directly on you, I do believe the air feels cooler than a traditional fan. However, I initially placed this unit in a very small room (8'x8'), filled it with ice and water, and placed it on oscillate with the hope that I would come back to find the room cooler. It was not the least bit cooler (wish I had a thermometer so that I could prove it). Still, when you have the unit blowing on you it does seem cooler...better than just a fan. So, it's not perfect but can give a bit of relief. As other reviewers have mentioned, the poorly translated directions are very difficult to decipher but thankfully there are several clear diagrams showing set-up and operation.

I live in Washington state in an area where the humidity is about 45-50%. Therefore a evaporative cooler should work great. WELL...the instructions are fun to read, seriously they arent exactly useful but good for a laugh. PROS: Fan works great. I like the timer/sleep features its not extremly noisy CONS: doesnt cool very much even with ice in the water(that i kept in the fridge) and in the upper comparment i think this is because the mesh is uses is very much like that of a laundry bag not thick enough to absorb much water. The indicator lights are bright enough to be a night lite. Overall, if you want a fan with a bit of humidity this is your thing. If you want something to actually cool a room or space of any kind. You should get an air conditioner.

I'm not sure if you guys know or not, but you are supposed to crack the windows in you're house when you turn this on. I live in southern california, in the middle of the desert so I know what i'm talking about. I got this product because our master cool swamp cooler doesnt reach our room. It works fantastic. most of the people that said that this swamp cooler is a piece of crap, probably didnt crack a window. I know you would think well thats stupid that will just let the cold air out. but the reason you have to put water in it, is because it lets out a mist of water to cool off you're body. and it needs somewhere to go after. just remember before you buy this, that when you get it, you need to CRACK A WINDOW!!

Bought this unit for a study (warmest room in the house). Very pleased with the item, seems to lower room temp by about 3-5 degrees. Very easy to use. Low noise level.

My husband and I currently live in Germany we live on the 3rd floor and Germans dont believe in central a/c. We have been here over 2 years now and during the summer it doesn't usually get very hot but this summer it is. I decided to buy this unit hoping it would cool down our apartment better than a few fans... I was sadly mistaken this unit is hardly cooler than a fan and unless you are sitting directly infront of it you wont feel anything this sad little thing puts out. It says for best results fill 2/3 water 1/3 ice which makes no difference it also has a cooling feture which makes no difference on or off. At night my husband and I sleep with 3 fans plus this thing and only a sheet if that on us and it is still almost to hot to sleep. Other than that this unit is pretty nice its easy to fill light weight looks good has a remote and it arrived in good time but thats not why you buy something like this so the cons out weight the pros. My opinion don't buy this save your money and buy regular fans or a more expensive one that may actually work or buy one you put in your window DO NOT buy this if you actually want COLD air or something that will cool an area larger than a few feet you will be wasting your money.

I bought this product to cool the bedroom in my home. I live in Germany and it is usually not very hot, but the last couple of weeks it has been. Well I recieved the cooler in the mail, and read the directions,plugged it in to use it around 1pm. I will be fair this is NOT a Air Conditioner, but by 3pm I had to put more Ice in the unit because it was blowing out only warm air and the water in the unit had warmed to the tempature of the room. By the time I was ready to go to bed(11pm)the room was still as warm as when I had first plugged it in. I ended up unplugging the unit and opening all the windows in my house, and it was much cooler.SPT SF-609 Portable Evaporative Air Cooler with Ionizer I am very disatisifed with this product.

I live in California in the Bay Area. Not much humidity and the weather is typically pretty mild but it does get pretty hot in the summer (90+ degrees). I received the unit on a particularly hot day recently and I ran out and grabbed a bag of ice because i wanted to test this things cooling capability. I set it up next to my computer desk and turned on the cool air function. I was sitting about 5 feet from it and in 5 minutes my arm was freezing cold. I was perfectly comfortable the whole day but if i moved from the fan at all the heat was unbearable. This thing does not cool a room but it will cool the area directly in front of it. Once it cooled down a bit I emptied the water (which was made very easy due to the lightness of the unit) into my bathroom sink and used it that night as a normal fan. Its pretty quiet and the fan is powerful. Ive heard these swamp coolers can generate a musty smell so I make sure to empty it of water when I'm done using the cool air function. I only fill it with water when its extremely hot because the fan works fine for me most days. It's a very nice unit and it's exactly what I was looking for. Better than a fan and more efficient that an air conditioner.

For everyday use it makes a great fan and air ionizer/cleaner. It has an oscillating fan which you can direct up or down as it swings left and right to blow air all around the room. And it really helps on hot days if you add ice or cold water and turn on the Cool-Air function. It also comes with a full-function remote which comes in real handy. Best of all it doesn't use much energy to operate. You can't really go wrong with this cooler for the price.

To be fair, the product does not claim to be an air conditioner. However, it does claim to cool 12 degrees cooler, which I didn't find at all. I live in a dry Colorado climate, and still it is barely cooler than a fan. You have to fill it with tons of ice to even get that, and it requires refilling with water and ice often. If you don't clean it at least once a week, it starts smelling really bad. All this effort of refilling and cleaning is not worth the 3 to 5 degrees cooler you get. For that, I'd rather just plug in a fan and not have to worry about it every day. Save your money and buy a portable air conditioner. It's worth the extra investment, trust me.

I purchased this a few weeks ago and it works great, it is a great humidifier and when we use it as a cooler to cool the room it works great..I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for something to use in a small room.

The Whirwind is the proper name for this great apparatus. I live in am apartment in a old building. I love the place, but the only thing that gets bad is the summer weather. I can't install an air conditioner, so I bought this machine. It worked pefectly! It is definitely an air cooler, and with that great price, a must for any budget.

Low price but it looks pretty slick. Great remote that sticks to the side of the unit with a magnet. Let me just say, I have had this air cooler for 5 years now. Used virtually every day for hours at a time during summer and it still works nicely, every single function. Very effective heater in winter. As it's gotten older, it has to sort of warm up longer and longer till the fan slowly gets up to full speed... Odd. But apart from that as long as you keep the removable air filter clean (just rinse it) it does everything remarkably well. I cannot recommend this enough. Keep in mind it's NOT an air conditioner, it doesn't have a huge effect on the temperature even with the frozen bits. In fact, living about 150 yards from the shoreline, on a hot humid day the added humidity can actually make you feel hotter. This is the same for any evaporative cooler however so I certainly can't lover the rating for it.

We love our new swamp cooler! It is effective, pleasant and easy to use. It has totally saved us during recent heatwaves in our S.Californian valley. The only downside was a sour smell after a couple of weeks' use, although we were changing the water regularly. When I contacted the company, they suggested adding some dish soap. This didn't work, but then we stumbled on the solution- adding baking soda to the water. This has proved very effective.

I bought this for my apartment that does not have an air conditioner or the ability to put in a window one either. We only receive about 3 months of hot weather so I figured the air cooler would be enough to balance it out. It works really well, I enjoy the timer, and the water is usually still halfway fool after a nights sleep. I can notice a change in the air quality in the room when I am using it, and I also enjoy the air cooler if only for the humidifier effects. I am going to be moving soon into a new apartment with an air conditioner but I still plan on using the air cooler mainly for the fan, purifier, and humidifier benefits. Works well, I simply put in ice rather than using the ice packs though...
