This little bad boy is a great buy for the money. It's a little louder than an equal BTU window unit, but it's portability and cooling output is worth a little noise. It is not made for a big room, so I have it in my sons 15' X 25' bedroom and it keeps it ice cold if needed.

I bought this model for a bedroom and it takes a while to get used to the racket. The fan mode is quiet, but once the compressor kicks in to cool things down it sounds like a locomotive! I would think twice before buying another portable unit like this one, and most certainly would not buy a second "Amana." I need some sleep, and this certainly was not considered when they designed this model a/c. Then finally the thing went haywire! A few months into purchase the temperature setting went to ninety nine degrees on it's own, and the unit died a fairly quick death. The warantee replaced the unit after a few thousand calls for repair, during which I had to deal with "Haier" not the "Amana Company" Talk about things not being what the seem - it is just labeled "Amana" proving "Cheap Trick" is not just the name of a rock band.

Its great. No buckets of water to empty daily and well worth the cost. I use it to cool a spare bedroom that is usually very hot, and it has made that room cool enough to make it comfortable to sleep in. It does vent out a window, but easily moved into closet during cooler months or as a back up a/c when the whole house air fails. It will only cool one room, but at this price point, ([...]) its well worth any short falls. Velcro remote to top of unit so does not get lost is suggested or keeping remote in a nearby draw for safe keeping.

As a previous poster noted, Amana does not acknowledge the existence of these rebadged Haier units on its site. Unfortunately, Haier also does not seem to acknowledge them, making support put-near impossible. The a/c unit does require a small window (or a large one largely blocked off) which can take some work if your windows are not the right size, but that's true of any unit like these. It is a very handy unit, without the need to empty buckets. It is also fairly noisy, with odd controls that require the remote. It was great the first year we had it, less so the second despite careful storage. You'd probably do better with a domestic-production (or European, or Japanese) unit if you can find one.

While this is a nice unit, it does have a significant drawback. All controls are not on the cabinet. The remote control is required. If the dog chews the remote, you will be up the creek without a paddle. (Actually, they do give you an extra remote, but after that you are on your own.) Don't try ordering another remote from Amana... this unit is an Amana in name only and is not supported by Amana. All that said... I kept the unit anyway.

This unit works great. It is really powerfull and pretty quiet. Comes on wheels so it is easy to move around. Keeps our large rooms cool right through the summer. Note this needs to vent out of a window. No problem for me and I'm really happy with it!

This product is advertised as being portable, but it must be attached to a window vent to work. It also won't work with a sliding glass door. So it's not portable. When I called to complain, the customer support supervisor would not give me contact information for higher management. She wanted my name and contact information instead. Buyers should also know that Amana is now owned by Haier, which is owned in part by the government of the People's Republic of China.

Purchased this item, never worked properly. Called the company...company doesn't have a technician in the area to fix. Have to send in the cord and serial number pay certified mail, pay to have it thrown out...and wait for a new one. Don't buy one, junk!

We have the WA-1220M model of this product (virtually identical). If you stand right in front on it, up to about 5 feet away, it's nice. However, it has several drawbacks: 1. It isn't very good at drying the air; evaporation is needed for effective air-conditioning (whether in your car or your home). 2. It must be drained of the water it does pull from the air, and draining the unit is very cumbersome. It comes with a small flexible plastic tube that has to be connected to the rear bottom of the unit; the other end must be lower in order to drain or the unit really does very little and although there's an indicator light that will come on if the unit is quite full of water, it's very rare that the light comes on (and it only does so LONG after the unit has stopped cooling the air). We have taken to wrapping a large towel around the far end of the tube to collect water that drains, but basically you must tilt the heavy unit backwards to try to drain it. This is not particularly effective but it must be done. 3. It has wheels, but it doesn't roll easily (it's hard to push or pull it in a straight line and the wheels are so small even getting over a low rug is difficult. 4. Moving the unit up or down a single step can be accomplished by one person but since the entire unit is made of very smooth, slippery plastic (it has handles but they're very shallow & not helpful), it's more safely accomplished with two people. 5. Consider that this unit, while mobile, sacrifices a good window seal. The large exhaust hose (which pumps the hot air outside) resembles a telescoping dryer hose that easily falls out of the backside of the unit and is awkward to extend evenly. The unit comes with a smallish piece of foam with a cutout hole for the hose. However, you are left with having to find some way to block the rest of whatever window you choose to put the hole into. We use a large carboard box panel and cut a hole out of, then duct-tape the box into the window opening to block out air seepage. As you can imagine, it looks pretty tacky. We wouldn't buy this again.
